Network Connections gone after XP SP2 Install

After successfully negotiating the "Access Denied" issue, I successfully
installed SP2 (from CD) only to find that all Network Connections were gone!
This included my dial-up to the internet (and therefore my connection to
non-charge support). By using up my "2 free support issues", I was able to
uninstall SP2 and have a usable computer (uninstalling SP2 was the only
option the M$ tech offered, and blamed my problems on "viruses & spyware").
I run THE most recent version of McAfee, periodically run AdAware SE,
CWShredder, and SpyBot - Search and Destroy.

Other than "do not install SP2", which I cannot deny is annoyingly tempting,
is there any suggestions out there?
