I Just installed SP2 and I cannot use network connections now. I had an Icon
on my desktop to login to my DSL service and it does not work now, I cannot
create another in "Network Connections" because when I click on the options
they do not work. It will not list my adapters either like my Nic card when I
load network connections from control panel like it used to. I do not have a
virus. Like I said I just installed SP2 to Windows XP and this happened.
Also I noticed when I r/click in the network connections window on "refresh"
it comes up and says "service not running". Also when I go to Administrative
tools in control panel then click on "services" drop down to network
connections and r/click and select properties this is in the command line,
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" when I run this it says "unable
to load module", so updating to SP2 has diabled this somehow and I cannot
turn on network connections to view my adapters. any help would be
appreciated!
Thank you

BTW this happend with just the SP2 install, not the updates after

Service Pack 2 installs and enables the MS Firewall. Go into the
Control Panel and disable the firewall.

For starters turn the firewall back on or invest in a third party firewall.

Have you tried resetting your winsock?

See this particular section on this page:

Malware Repair:
http://kgiii.info/windows/all/genera...ix.html#malrep

Do you see a NIC in your device manager?

Does it say anything in your event viewer?

Did you follow the best practices while installing SP2?

I am using kapersky and I turned it on and off with no help

I tried this and no help either

I did this with no help either.

> Do you see a NIC in your device manager?

Yes, I can see all my devices there.

> Does it say anything in your event viewer?

nothing out of the ordinary here either.

> Did you follow the best practices while installing SP2?

Yes, to the Tee. Infact reading some of the other posts on this subject I
did not see any fixes for this posted at all, seems alot of others are
experiencing this also.

any other ideas out there would be appreciated.

Thanks

This is what <Jeff G> shared with us today ...

Wonder if you can ping devices on your network?
Is the TXP/IP stack installed? Also....You could try
removing the TCP/IP service and re-install it.
Can you ping loopback or 127.0.0.1?

Hi Jeff - From my Blog, Defending Your Machine, addy below in my Signature:

PRELIMINARY STEPS

#########IMPORTANT#########
Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs below, download
both a copy of LSPFIX here:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

AND a copy of Winsockfix for W95, W98, and ME
http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip
Directions here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

or here for Win2k/XP
http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Info and download here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Directions here: http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet connection.
If this should occur, these programs, LSPFIX and WINSOCKFIX, will enable you
to regain your connection.

For XP SP2, you can also use the Run command: netsh winsock reset catalog

to fix this problem without the need for these programs.

For XP pre-SP2, you can use this Run command: netsh int ip reset
resetlog.txt

Also, one MS technician suggested that the following sequence of Run
commands for XP may help in some cases:

netsh int reset all
ipconfig /flushdns

See also: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm for additional XPSP2
info/approaches using the netsh command.

An alternative approach with necessary .reg files which will often work even
when the above doesn't is defined here, courtesy of MVP Bob Cerelli:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/ie_tips.htm#winsock_fix Recommended.

Remember - you need to do any downloads ahead of time BEFORE you do any
malware cleaning.
#########IMPORTANT#########

I would recommend that you try the SP SP2 Winsock commands and Bob Cerelli's
..reg files and see if that helps.
