i didn't know there was such a things as a laptop drive adapter and USB
drive enclosure. Should i bother to find one to borrow/rent/purchase or just
use some 10/100 junk i have lying around?

what's the big secret? the 98 network troubleshooting could have simply
said: "hey dumbass, the wires are crossed, get a hub or the other kind of
cable, don't you remember 6 years ago when you hired that guy to hook up
your **** at work? He told you all this bullcrap but your eyes glazed over."
Instead 98's network trouble shooter told me everything but that.
