Network Discovery Won't Stay On

This works on my old laptop, but my new laptop is not playing...

When I make a network private, discovery is turned on for that network as
I'd expect but it doesn't remeber to leave it turned on the next time I
connect. Why would this be?

Vista can be forgetful at times. It sometimes forgets network settings, in a
similar way to forgetting folder settings.

But you may have your network configured incorrectly. If it's constantly
coming up 'unidentified network' then there's a problem, which means that
it's not recognizing the other computer.

When properly configured you should be able to see the name(s) of the
computer(s) you're connected to if you hover over the network icon in the
systray. Setting up static ip addresses helps there.

I experience this also and it is a relatively recent thing. I'm hoping SP1
fixes it. I did check as one poster suggested by hovering over the network
icon and it does recognize the connection.

It recognises my networks without any problem and those networks are
identified as being private.

When I browse a network I get the banner accress the top of the window,
stating that "Network discovery and file sharing are turned off ... click to
change". Which I dutifully do. I'm then asked if I what to turn on network
discovery on for all public networks; I say "No, make the network I'm
connected to a private network" (which it already is). I can then browse the
network. If I disconnect and connect again I have to tell it again.

It works fine on my old laptop, which I use to connect to exactly the same
networks.
