I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.

Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not
connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that
I am.

Glitch, common problem ... suggestions? Thanks, DH

Might be some weird glitch. I've had that happen, too. Was fine on a
reboot.

Same thing happened to me this morning when I booted up my machine. It could
not see our wireless network. I merely rebooted and it found it the second
time through.

Hi Dave

This happens sometimes. Usually a logoff and logon or restart wil
clear it up

Check to make sure that you have these services set this way. They hel
the Network icon know when you are connected or not

1. Network Connections - Started - Manua
2. Network List Service - Started - Automati
3. Network Location Awareness - Started - Automati
4. Network Sore Interface Service - Started - Automati

Ok Dave. That's something different all together then. See this
tutorial instead to see if "Network" is not grayed out and if you can
check it.

If you can, then check to see if the Network icon is set to hide here.

I have the Network icon is always Display ... and now it is on my screen.
This is just gitchy behavior ... and rather than spend more time on this,
I'm just reporting this. Perhaps the good folks at MS can use a high
pressure hose to clean out these bugs. DH, Vista Home Premium and it;s up
to date.

Restack your TCP/IP

1. Click Start. Click Run. Type cmd. Click OK.
2. On the C:/> prompt, type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt".
3. Press the Enter key.
4. Restart the computer.

Note: If you're not in root, type "cd /" (without the quotation marks,)
followed by the enter key to get to root.

have the same problem, finally found the Microsoft explanation (see
link). I did rip a cd on the media player before the problem occurred.
no solution yet.

'The network adapter icon incorrectly displays a red "X" in the
Manage Network Connections window in Windows Vista when the network
adapter is connected' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945925)
