Never Ending Updates

I noticed I went over my ISP download threshold and found that the problem
has been Auto Update running inthe background downloading about half a gig
for a 370Kb update. I manually rdownloaded and ran that update no problem
and then the same thing happened on the next and the next.

The same happens with the web based WU site. It downloads initially (more
than the quoted size of the download) then verifies the download then goes
off and downloads more, verifies, downloads and so on ad infinitum. It
doesn't seem to be storing all this data on my disk and I have cleared out
the updates folder to no effect.

Any idras? I am now stuck back in the dark ages having to do all my updates
by finding them in the downloads area, downloading them and running them
manually.

On the computers where I've seen this problem, it's apparently a result
of some strange interaction with McAfee VirusScan 8.0i, although I don't
know what to do about it.
