Hi, came on to check for updates. Nver before had any problem with Windows
Update.

I let it scan, it found one high-priority update:

Update for Windows XP (KB887742)
This update addresses an issue that could cause your system to stop
responding if certain firewall or antivirus programs are installed. You can
help resolve this issue by installing this HTTP.sys update from Microsoft.
After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

This problem does not apply to me but I thought, jus in case, I would let it
install. However, when I clicked install, it brought up the download progress
bar, but instantly jumped to full and said "Failed".

The error code is 0x80246005. I'm not worried about this update. I'm worried
about future ones. Is this going to recur?

I have tried multiple times to install this, and have waited a while and
came back, and restarted etc. Nothing.

The Windows Update Help does not list this error code.

Any Help?

80246005 error

Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc
then press enter
Now look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop

Click Start, select Run, type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
then press enter
Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents.

Click Start, select Run, type in: type services.msc
then press enter
Now look again for the Automatic Update Service and choose to start

Try running the Updates again.

If in doubt, cut and paste the contents of the datastorage folder to another
location so that you can copy them back if required.

No guarantees, but it’s worth a try.

Came on today, read your post, and was about to try it.
But first, I tried it again just to be sure, and it worked! Installed fine,
no problem.

Just a fluke, a glitch?

Thanks for the help tho!

Fluke, glitch, doesn't matter - you're getting the updates. I recently
cleaned up my computer, got rid of a lot of junk, now automatic updates are
downloading and working. Fluke, glitch, dosn't matter.
Have a good weekend.

I have the same problem as the previous poster. I've tried your suggestion,
but it didn't work. Any other suggestions?
