Neverending notification of update KB831167 for IE

I am using Windows 2000 service pack 4. I get a reminder from Windows update
utility about new updates, and it never goes away even though the update
apparently completes successfully. The update is a "critical update for
internet explorer 6 service pack 1 (KB831167)". The closest article I can find
on it is:

http://groups.google.ca/group/micros...d8b27fded669c3

The advice is to "Check the supercedence on the update and ensure it's not been
rolled up into a later Cumulative Update for IE6SP1". I was wondering if
someone could provide an indication of how to do that. Thanks.

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer is not a valid newsgroup.

Other threads about this issue indicate the the problem was on MS's end and
that it was fixed c. 10 May-07. Is Automatic Updates still offering you
831167 now?

Yes, I am still being reminded that I have windows updates awaiting on the
system tray. When I initiate the update, only that one update shows. When the
update (ostensibly) finishes successfully, I am still with the reminder of
updates awaiting. This only happens when I log in as admin.

P.S. Thanks for pointing out the illegitimacy of
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer

Please log in as Admin and run the Windows Update site once in
Internet Explorer. Let it scan your machine for any needed update.
The false update should vanish afterwards.

Bye,

I've got the same problem. I Logged in as admin and ran the microsoft update
in internet explorer. It found the same 831167 update and "installed" it.
Progressbar of the install screen fills up in about 1 sec. This 831167 update
still wants to install over and over again.

That happened today or when? AFAIK the issue with the wrong detection
of Windows updates for Windows 2000 should be fixed (since May 11th
CEST).

You may try http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip for a
q&d fix. Download the file and extract the containing "Q867801-WUFix.reg".
Afterwards double click the REG file and let it merge into the registry.
Finally shut down all opened IE windows and see if WU/AU still offers
KB/Q831167.

Bye,
Freudi

Problem solved. WUfix-regfile helped. Thanks!
