A new computer ready on Saturday

I have ordered a new computer with Vista installed to replace an old one
which is very long in the tooth.\Having read dozens of posts in this
newsgroup it seems that about 50% love Vista and the others hate it. No
doubt I will find out on Saturday and I fully expect a learning curve. At
present I have XP with SP2 and that is the last of a long line from Windows
3.1. Wish me luck and look out for the odd post inthe coming weeks.
I have ordered a 400GB hard disk and 2 Gb memory, reckon it is enough? John

Yes, that should be plenty of RAM & hard drive space. At least it won't be
under powered. Make sure you take off all the worthless startup programs
that most manufacturers put on there.

Some of us don't hate or love it but you don't hear about that too often.
Getting emotional about an OS is silly. To me the fun part is learning about
it. There is definitely a learning curve, if only to figure out where they
hid some function or what they decided to call it this time around. Just the
fact that you are aware of it will help you a lot. Just as in XP, Help and
Support will tell you most of what you need to know and the rest you can
probably find out here.

Sure, that's plenty. You should do just fine.

There have been about, oh, 100 million copies of Vista distributed. Of
those, approximately 280 people have had trouble and posted here.

Add another one who doesn't post here. I just nuked Vista on his machine
and installed Ubuntu. Man, that felt good, I'll tell ya. All his "Vista
Ready" hardware worked too.

What about a video card? You want at least a card with 128 MB of RAM and
DirectX 10.

Great! As long as you get a powerful-enough computer, and understand
that it takes time to learn and get accustomed to anything new, I'm
sure you'll do well with it. It looks like you should be in good
shape.

Good luck, and feel free to ask questions here as needed.

In both respects, it depends entirely on what you do with computer,
but for most people, those specs should be enough.
