New Computer - Vista or XP

I'm in the market for a new Dell, who still offer systems with XP. I'm
tempted to go with Vista, however because of bad press, thinking I should
stick with XP. Any advice from Vista users? If it is installed on a new
computer (making the assumption most everything would then be compatible with
Vista) does this lessen the problems?

Toss a coin!
I have both, but I do my major work on XP.
If you have old printers, etc that you want to use, you probably won't find
Drivers for them.
Some older programs , you can not run, even in compatibility mode.

It is very much a personal choice, as it will, hopefully, become an improved
OS compared to XP. At the present, it is NOT.

You should have no problem with a new machine.Get 2 gb of memory and
even integrated video will be ok. A core 2 duo processor a good choice.

I bought my wife a new Dell desktop with Vista Premium in APril 2007;
works fine. Her older HP Printer 5550 required a new driver that
provided less capability than the XP driver (HP's problem), 6 year old
Visioneer scanner worked with the XP drivers, USB multicard camera card
reader worked fine;Paint Shop Pro XI, MS Publisher 2002, and Office 2003
( her main software) worked fine after installation.

It ultimately depends on your needs and your current setup right now? Are
you using applications that your are not 100% sure are not compatible with
Vista? Vista is really the future right now and Microsoft and the industry
has made a lot of progress in improving the operating systems performance
and stability. Just make sure you do the necessary research, will you buying
a Laptop or Desktop, will you be using it at work on your network, is your
IT people willing to support it on their network?

I dual boot between Vista and XP. I go into Windows XP about once every
three weeks just to update the antivirus and anti spyware programs. I keep
it in case Vista fails me. So far it has not.

Use this tool on your present computer as a guide to what may or may not
work..

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx

Print off the results and then go to each hardware and software vendor to
confirm that patches or updates exist or for details on purchasing new.

Decide whether the cost of moving to Vista is viable based upon what you
have discovered.

I know a number of competent consultants who advise their clients to avoid
vista if possible. I'm not saying you'll have problems, but there is a
pretty high likelihood you will. What does it have that you need?

The most insightful comment I've seen in this news group is that if you
don't install anything it will probably be all right - but that rather
limits the usefulness of the system!

Similar comments were made 6 years ago at the release of Windows XP as
well as previous operating systems released before then.

I think you'll find that the number of machines offered with XP are limited
to high end gaming machines.
I was very disappointed with the choices of machines that still offered XP.
To avoid Vista, I built my own machine and installed XP Pro.
It actually cost me more than buying a prebuilt Vista machine, but avoiding
Vista was worth it to me.

Not true. Dell, to name just one OEM, offers its Inspiron 530S with
Windows XP, starting at $499.
