New (default) security policies in Vista

Recently some default security policies has been changed on my Vista,
apparently as the result of upgrades to my system.

1: I can no longer activate an URL received in an incoming email directly
but must copy the URL to the address bar in my Internet Explorer. This makes
sense and I can live with that.

2: I discover that I can no longer open some of my word documents "created
in an earlier version of Microsoft Office". The message refers to registry
policy settings and the help system refers to a Microsoft knowledge base
article 922850 that leads me nowhere useful.

Can someone point me to relevant documentation on this (new) feature please?

regards Sven

Are you sure this is not due to third-party applications?
I have Vista Home Premium fully patched (including all the most recent
updates) and this doesn't happen here...

Please tell us the version of the application you are asking about,
your OS, Service Pack level
and the FULL contents of any error message(s)

case 1 could very well be my Norman Virus Control, but case 2 refers so
specifically to Microsoft Office, policy settings in the registry and MS
Knowledge base article 922850 that I would be surprised if it was caused by
NVC.

However, your suggestion is thrilling and I shall indeed investigate that
angle.

Thanks for your comment.

What were the word documents created in and what is the exact message
you are receiving ?
Did you check out any of the KB articles under 'REFERENCES' on KB922850?

Office Outlook 2007
It has changed it's behaviour sometimes during the last months. I haven't
cared too much because it wasn't really that difficult to just copy the URL
to the address bar in IE7

I have later copied the documents in question to my XP computer that still
has MS Office 2003. The documents seem to have been created by Word version
2. I "upgraded" them to version 2003 and then copied them back to my Vista
machine. Thus this new feature will probably not disturb me much.

I can't swear that I examined absolutely every reference, but I checked
quite a few, including searching for all the given registry keys. (I have
none of the specific keys in my registry)

My sympathy - I happened to be there at the time and still feel sorry.

See if the following KB provides you any insight to registry changes
that can be undone to view Word docs, if so desired :

Information about certain file types that are blocked after you install
Office 2003 Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810

I can't find anything concerning Outlook, but since you've founnd a way
to utilize the email URLS ...

Your sympathy is appreciated, Sven. I'm still angry that in the
following weeks the responders were told that wearing masks was
optional. Now most of them are being stricken by illnesses that could
have been avoided. Whoever made masks optional was a moron at best,
criminally negligent at worst.

1. What exactly happens when you click the url?
If an error message mentions restrictions in effect, see
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm - this seems to be a
fairly common problem with IE8 installations.
If the url is prefixed with blocked, see
http://www.slipstick.com/mail1/blocked.htm

2. Why isn't the KB article useful?
