New device sound on/off upon signing in

Hi

I have noticed something strange. When I press the "Sign in" button in WLM,
the first thing that happens is that my computer pauses for a second, then
plays the sound of a new devices having successfully been _disconnected_, and
then immediately afterwards, it plays the sound of a devices having
succesfully been _connected_ (just the way it would if you pressed the WiFi
button on your laptop). I have a feeling it may have something to do with my
webcam which does not work very well with either XP or Vista (it is an
internal Acer Orbicam made by Logitech, and I'm running Vista at the moment),
but the same sounds were never played in WLM 8.0. Does anybody know what goes
on when you sign in which is different in this version from 8.0?

Greetings,

To be honest, 8.1 hasn't been around long enough for me to know all the new behavior so I'm
unsure exactly why you're seeing this. However Messenger has always enumerated the webcam
devices on startup so this may just be some new method they're using and/or your
driver/device resetting itself when it does it.

We'll see if this happens in later builds. Does the webcam at least work in Messenger after
this?

The webcam does work, but only after several times of pressing the "webcam
settings button." This was however the case in 8.0 as well and happens both
in Vista and in XP and is probably due to bad drivers or webcam utilities.
There's even a warning in Vista telling me that there are "known
compatibility issues" with the camera utilities. But nothing is different in
that respect from 8.0 to 8.1. I really find the camera issus weird as the
laptop is only a few months old and even had a sticker on it saying "Vista
Premium Ready".

Anyway. To what countries is the sms function available? I'm in the UK, but
the mobile icon doesn't seem to appear in my WLM.
