New Drive XP Fresh Install - Reboots after SP2 upgrade

I purchased a new HD and installed a stand-alone, non-domain, fresh copy of
XP 4x with same end results.
First steps: Immediately after installing XP, I ran MS Update and installed
latest update and rebooted. Ran MS Update again and installed SP2.

1st & 2nd attempts: System rebooted continuously even when I tried the
various Safe Mode and LKGC options. I then turned off reboot option in the
Windows Advanced Options boot menu and got the BSOD STOP 0x0000007B
(0xF8FC7528, …) error message. I ran through the various KB articles and then
through the various aumha.org articles with the same end results.

3rd attempt: I disabled the agp440 service through the Recovery Console and
had the same end results. The system would reboot at the mup service when
attempting the Safe Mode options. System rebooted continuously even when I
tried the various Safe Mode and LKGC options. I got the same BSOD STOP error
again.

4th attempt: I tried the repair option rather than deleting the partition
for a fresh install. All seemed well as the system finally made it much
further than just the first two bars on the startup splash screen. The system
then rebooted again and I disabled the reboot option in the boot menu to get
a Stop: c0000135 error. Going through the KB once again, there were no
resolutions that prevented the same end results.

I’d rather not be pointed to any of these KB articles as is typical of the

It's been almost a whole month and there were four people that found the
article helpful, but no replies helping my situation. I still am stuck with
a fresh install of XP Pro with no SP1 or SP2. My system runs great and I run
a tight network with perimeter protection, but I prefer to have the latest
software and security updates. If anyone has experienced this problem of
continuous reboots after installing either the SP1 or SP2 service packs,
typically at the agp440 process, I would appreciate a reply.

Have the latest BIOS for your motherboard? There were some early problems
with SP2 and certain processors/chipsets.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, my Dell Dimension 4400 has the latest BIOS, A06,
with the release date of 06/25/2002. I try to keep my systems up-to-date as
a habit leftover from past Dell Premier and MCP training. I deleted the
partition and performed a full format on each attempt except the fourth.

An option I am now considering is installing the updates one by one, but I
am very concerned about what will happen when I reach the one update that is
likely causing this problem.

Is your OS type set to "Plug and Play" in the BIOS?
Do you have a Prescott P4??

Man, you are quick! Yes, my BIOS is set to PNP, but I doubt the chip is an
Intel Prescott mobile process since this is a Dell desktop rather than a
laptop. I did a real quick MS KB seach for "Prescott" after your posting and
the hotfix is available only by contacting MS-PSS.

My Dell support site shows my original configuration having this processor
info:
"PROCESSOR, 80531, 1.7G, 0, 400FSB, SOCKET N, D0"
while the System Properties dialog window simply says:
"Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz"

After reading the 832885 article, it refers to the power management
features. I do have an APC USB UPS for backup power; however, when I
performed my clean install I only had the monitor, keyboard, and mouse
attached while all other device cords were dangling along awaiting me to
finish updating the PC.

Do you think this is a viable fix for my situation? What are your opinions
on my thoughts of installing the updates one by one from the list of SP1&2
fixes? Thanks again for the reply!

It's been a whole month (AGAIN) with no new replies helping my situation. I
am still stuck with a fresh install of XP Pro (from partition deletion and
full format) with no SP1 or SP2. My system runs good and I keep a tight
network of hardware perimeter protection (for this PC and a wireless laptop
and two wireless peripheral devices), but I prefer to have the latest
software and security updates.

If anyone has experienced this problem of continuous reboots after
installing either the SP1 or SP2 service packs, typically at the agp440
process and where all of the other fixes I listed in the original post do NOT
work, I would appreciate a reply. My BIOS is up-to-date from Dell and set to
PNP, but my processor is an Intel P4. I performed my clean install with only
the monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached.

An option I am (STILL) considering is installing the updates one by one, but
I am very concerned about what will happen when I reach the one update that
