New IM message alert

When the taskbar blinks alerting for a new instant message, I change to that
window. If I stay too short (e.g. to read a "lol" message or something
similarly short) and I switch back to a previous window, the taskbar will
keep flashing... Is there anyway to fix this either than having to stay
longer non the IM window?
