After I install the new Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET
Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86, can I uninstall Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.0 & 2.0 Service Packs to free up some space?

Nevermind... looks like I can't.

I wish the boys and girls in Redmond would get their junk sorted out.

So you have confirmed you have software/etc that uses one of the other
versions of the .NET Framework?

No.

I'm just going on what other posts are telling me. Also, the 3.5 update says:

"a full cumulative update that contains many new features building
incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative
servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0
subcomponents."

That sounds like they're dependant on each other. If someone wants to test
that theory... be my guest.

Let me know how it goes. I'd love to know if I can free up some space
without F-ing my whole system up first.

If your system is being offered the update then one of the .NET 2, 3, or
3.5 runtimes is installed.
They are installed by programs that need them to function.

Prior to .NET 2, runtimes were NOT dependent upon each other.
Subsequent runtimes, as in 3 and 3.5, *are* dependent upon .NET 2.

KB951748 should NOT install 3 nor 3.5 IF they are not installed on the
system. IF .NET 2 is installed, SP2 for it will be installed.

If you don't want any .NET runtimes installed then you will need to
uninstall the programs that installed them in the first place.
That will save disk space.

Correction: it's *KB951847*, not 951748.

How do I know if .NET is in my PC? I notice that about 5 to 10 of my WinXP
Pro machines that does not have any flavor of .NET installed is still
offered the update.

I don't see any traces of .NET in Add/Remove Programs. I don't see
Microsoft.NET folder anywhere in my hard disk (ALL FILES including
hidden/system shown). I don't have .NET at all but my PCs say that I need
KB951847.

Did anyone else notice this?
