New PC soon - should I chose XP or Vista?

Hi,

I'm after informed opinions if possible...

I'm going to be building a new pc soon. The supplier has copies of XP in
stock so I was going to get one (since I have used XP for several years
without major issues) but I am wondering about Vista.

The computer will be used for web browsing, home office & some games.

Is there any advantage to Vista over XP (other than continued support)? I
have tried looking at the product descriptions but have not seen anything to
swing the decision. Since all I am wanting is an operating system that lets
me use the software etc I currently have, should I buy another copy of the XP
I am familiar with or (the untried by me) Vista?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Matt

Well if you want to continue using the software you already have it is
almost certain to mean XP. Have you tried the free update compatibility page
which should give you more info?

What software do you currently have? If you have some older applications
then XP may be the way to go.

Get XP.

Vista has no significant advantages and loads of disadvabtages.

Vista is just not ready for the market. I am going to have to reinstall XP
on my Vista machine as Vista is so unstable (paarticularly USB ports) and
incompatible with so much usefiul software and hardware.

I still use both on different PCs and in fact, both on one PC.

Make sure you have 2G RAM in your new PC and go for Vista. It's more secure
and, once you get used to it, better to use.

If I were you, I would do a dual boot of XP and Ubuntu. I would stay
away from Vista. Check out Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/. It's free.

Hi

I haven't tried the compatibility too, thought that was just for hardware &
I haven't bought that yet?

The main applications that are to be run are not that old, all purchased in
the last 18 months (since I bought current PC). The main one that a new pc
HAS to run (to avoid me getting too much grief at home!) is the Sims2 (which
the EA site says is Vista compatible). Other than that, OpenOffice & web
browser are the only "must have's".

I've seen reviews of Vista which make reference to various features but all
I'm after is a stable operating system so it sounds like XP might be the best
bet?

Thanks,

Matt

If you are truly building your own computer, i.e., buying all of the
needed hardware components and installing them yourself, I say install
Vista Ultimate X64 and never look back.

Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor from this website.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx

Read what it says about compatibility with any of your software and
hardware such as scanners, printers etc..

Then go to software author, and hardware manufacturer websites to confirm
whether or not there are Vista issues and subsequent fixes for them.

If all proves to be OK, go for Vista...
