New Server Install Problems

My server crashed but I was able to save the data. I got a new server and
paid someone $1500 to reinstall SBS 2003. Now we are having problems.

1. No client computer can open an Office Professional 2003 file from
Windows Explorer. We have to open the Office program then browse to the file.

2. The Add/Remove Programs on the client computers is wrong. It just lists
the programs but will not allow me to uninstall or repair any of them.

3. System is extremely slow.

4. Client computers lose connectivity to the server and have to be
restarted about once a day.

I am not experienced by any means but can not afford to continue to pay
someone to fix this. Any help is greatly appreciated!

We need to know more.

Was the SBS installed to completion? Exchange is in place, and the start
wizards were run?

SBS RTM, or SBS R2?

What was done to the workstations to allow them to function on the new server?
The SBS wizards should have been run, the workstations should have been
disjoined from the old domain, and then rejoined to the new domain with http://servername/connectcomputer

What errors show in the event logs of the server and the workstations that
might be related?

Please post the unedited results of the command:

ipconfig /all > c:\iptest.txt

from the server and a representative workstation.

And maybe we should run a scan with the SBS 2003 BPA just to make sure it
was set up properly:

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And are we running full nightly backups of the server?

I'd be suspecious that the original AD was not restored and/or the
workstations were not rejoined to the newly built SBS AD domain perhaps with
the same name. On a workstation command prompt type;

nltest /sc_verify:domain.local

...and post the results ( along with the IPconfig and other suggested
supporting information ).

This does not appear to be a SBS issue but more of a file association
problem. If you open Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types is .doc
associated with Word?

This could be a security issue. You cannot Add or Remove programs without
administrative rights. User usually needs to be local administrator on their
workstation.

> 3. System is extremely slow.

Need more details. Slow doing what? Are we talking server is slow or
workstation is slow?

> 4. Client computers lose connectivity to the server and have to be

Need more details. When you say lose connectivity to the server are they
required to login again? How were the computers setup and joined to the SBS
domain? \\servername\connectcomputer should have been used for computers to
join SBS network.

$1500 to install SBS 2003 you should have not let the person leave until you
are satisfied and even then there should be some kind of post support for a
period of time.

I am not sure what was done to connect the workstations. Again, I apologize,
but I am a novice. I didn't watch him because I was afraid I would only pick
up bits and pieces and then think I knew something when I didn't.

I will go to the server and run the SBS 2003 BPA and post the results.

Yes, I am running daily backups of the server.

Here is the ipconfig from a workstation:

thank you.

the command you gave me comes back as invalid. I posted the ipconfig from
both a workstation and server under another reply. For some reason, my
original post has now become two.

Thank you again.

Thank you for your response.

1. The files are associated correctly.
2. The Add/Remove programs will list all programs. However, it only has
the options to repair or remove from programs installed AFTER new server was
installed.
3. The slowness is related to anything on the server when working from a
workstation. And yet, it is not consistently slow. For example, when in
Excel with a file located on the server open, if I try to move a cell this
action can take up to 1 minute. Same for saving, printing, etc.
4. The connectivity issue: When I browse to the server drive either
through explorer or a program, a dialog box appears stating that I lost
connectivity to the server. The only option that I have found that works is
to restart the workstation. All clients are having to do this daily.

Thank you again.

First off the client workstations are getting their IP's from the Gateway
and not the SBS server, so they are not able to use a DNS server that can
locate things in SBS's active directory.

With the Gateway/Router supplying DHCP services the SBS server is shutting
down it's DHCP services. In my opinion this is part of the SBS setup that
you describe you paid good money to have done for you. If you're comfortable
with your paid installer returning and fixing this and possibly other
issues, then I'd recommend that approach. Otherwise you might want to locate
a more profecient and SBS experienced resource. Some of these qualified and
competent remote support services professionals participate here, so you can
always pose that question here too.

The BPA report says something about sharing this would compromise security.
Should I post this here?
