Hi, if anyone can provide any help with this issue it would be greatly
appreciated.
I'm using Windows XP Home and when I check Microsoft Update a new
product category has recently appeared (I think it first appeared
earlier this October) - in the left hand column under "Select by
Product", underneath the usual "Windows" and "Office 2002/XP"
categories there's a new category, "SQL Server Feature Pack".
Within this category there is one high-priority update waiting to be
installed, the "MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)".
I'm a bit confused by this as I've never knowingly installed the SQL
Server Feature Pack on my machine - in fact I don't have any SQL
software installed whatsoever, nor any server software.
I'm wondering whether I need to install this patch at all, as Microsoft
Update does suggests I install other patches for Office products I
don't have, such as Publisher 2002 - but on further investigation
various KB articles state that this is a known issue and that if you
don't have the relevant product installed you doesn't install the
patch.
So I'm unsure if this MSXML 4.0 update is necessary or merely the
result of some anomaly in the product detection routine used by
Microsoft Update.
I see on another KB article [1] regarding MSXML that:
"Different versions of MSXML are included with various Microsoft
products, such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Microsoft Office, and Microsoft SQL Server. MSXML is also updated when
you install software updates for various Microsoft products."
OK - so perhaps I need the MSMXL patch - but why does it appear under
the category of "SQL Server Feature Pack", something that I've never
(knowingly) installed?
Thanks.
