Hi,

I recently bought my wife a new Toshiba U300-134 laptop with Vista (2 days
ago). We're using a wireless connection, my desktop running XP is fine. But
certain sites on the laptop fail, either running IE or Firefox.

www.microsoft.com - IE cannot display the webpage
www.google.com - IE Cannot display webpage

Other sites like bbc.co.uk/news are fine.
I've even looked for updates to roll back.. but because the laptop is new..
there haven't been any updates

I've trawled through the internet and have tried the following.

- netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
- uninstalled Norton AV
- MacAfee is not installed
- switch off phishing filter in IE.
- reset IE options to defaults
- tried with Fifefox browser same problem
- ping -t www.google.com responds
- power off modem/router

I'm running out of ideas.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks

Will

Check your hosts file. There may be some malicious entries there.

Check what DNS server your ip configuration points at. Try to change to
same settings as on the other machine.

Tobi,

The hosts file did contain an extra odd entry

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

I commented out the ::1 entry. But alas still no joy.

DNS servers seems to be the same on the working and non-working machines
namely 192.168.1.1

Any other thoughts ?

Will

Is there updated vista firmware for the modem/router?
If it was only IE7 doing it, you wouls say YES vista AGAIN!
But, firefox does it as well.
It could also be your ISP having probs with vista compatibility.

One other thing to try.
Right-click on your network connection, and untick TCP/IPv6.
It works fine with v4. Some ISPs are not ready for it.

Under tools, internet options, click on the security tab. Under restricted
sites, see if those 2 are there. If they are, remove them. You can also add
them under trusted sites as well.

I think I managed to resolve it in a roundabout way

I originally had a Draytek Vigor2600 modem/wireless router and I noticed the
latest firmware was over 3 years old !!!. I couldn't later find any later
drivers

Luckily I had another newer modem/wireless router (BTHomeHub). Once I
plugged this in and used a different account login (same ISP) everything was
hunky-dory.

So the upshot is.

- Maybe some of the things that were done beforehand did actually help.
- Maybe the old modem/wireless router wasn't compatible to Vista
- Maybe the new account helped

I'm leaning towards the modem/router explanation.

Once again I'd like to thank the people who took time to read and post a
response.
