recently I downloaded the 4 most recent updates thru auto updates. Then i
noticed internet explorer 6 and Mcafee Security Center displays screens in a
larger resolution then it did b4. In Windows Update webpage, i get two sets
of scroll bars because the screen will no longer fit where b4 the updates it
did. The lettering was much larger. When I did a system restore prior to the
updates, the problem went away. Same with Mcafee...when I viewed the firewall
page, it was to large to fit properly, but after the system restore....all is
back to normal. Anyone have any ideas?

I have windows xp home sp2
P3 600 Mhz
384M ram
Mcafee Internet Security 6.0

appearently windows update is beta release to the public...the updates are
always flawed and help and support are kinda slow. I sit here now without
these " critical updates" not installed, god only knows whats happening to
my computer. I hope someone isnt putting a trojan on me. Someone call
microsoft about that active x and scripting....its killing us

No, WU works fine for most. If you have specific problems, post them in new
messages with more detail and perhaps you can get help with them.

What did you update? Do not update device drivers in Windows
Update....always get them from the hardware manufacturer.

Hmm - yes, I think it can (I don't use autoupdate to install anything - just
to download). But the KB articles you post don't apply, so it may not have
been a driver download at all...

I'd 1) get the latest WinXP video driver from the hw mfr, install it in
Device Manager and 2) install these updates one at a time afterwards,
rebooting in between to see if the problem occurs again. They are important!

The browser won't make a lick of difference. As long as you're running
Windows, you need windows updates. And more importantly, *all* operating
systems need patching and maintenance.

I don't like to let anything be installed automatically, although I don't
mind updates downloading/notifying, and I like to install most updates one
at a time for testing before pushing them all out in a batch to another PC.

Whoops - I lost track of who I was replying to; you seem to have posted your
rant at the same time I replied to the other post. I spend too much time in
here. No need to reply in your own thread if you aren't adding any pertinent
details you left out...the thread is getting confusing. Post & wait for
replies - it can take some time - these are peer support newsgroups and
there's no guaranteed SLA!

I repeat that Windows Update can work fine. I use it on my servers/clients
on my own network as well as my clients' and have rarely had problems with
it. Many others, users and admins alike, do so successfully as well.

Of course it's always possible that an update can cause problems (that's why
most can be uninstalled).

Did you try what I suggested in my reply to your original post?

> .the updates are always flawed

No.

> , just come to this room , it may be our settings,

Patching is complicated. Your OS is complicated. On a known clean machine
running updated device drivers and software written correctly to run in your
OS version, it should be just fine for the most part. Have you scanned for
spyware/malware?

Many might say that McAfee is one way people can go wrong, but to each his
own
