Whoops - I lost track of who I was replying to; you seem to have posted your
rant at the same time I replied to the other post. I spend too much time in
here. No need to reply in your own thread if you aren't adding any pertinent
details you left out...the thread is getting confusing. Post & wait for
replies - it can take some time - these are peer support newsgroups and
there's no guaranteed SLA!
I repeat that Windows Update can work fine. I use it on my servers/clients
on my own network as well as my clients' and have rarely had problems with
it. Many others, users and admins alike, do so successfully as well.
Of course it's always possible that an update can cause problems (that's why
most can be uninstalled).
Did you try what I suggested in my reply to your original post?

Patching is complicated. Your OS is complicated. On a known clean machine
running updated device drivers and software written correctly to run in your
OS version, it should be just fine for the most part. Have you scanned for
spyware/malware?

Many might say that McAfee is one way people can go wrong, but to each his
