Ok Torgeir, there was no other firewall installed, as I had uninstalled
ZoneAlarm after the SP2 download, I think; hard to remember the exact
sequence sometimes! but the difficulty may have arisen after I manually
checked Update and found a .NET Service Pack of 10.2 megs waiting to go in,
and after that, I had slight difficulty in Logging off/Shutting Down, so at
some point, the screen came up with choices, like Start Windows Normally, and
Last Good Configuration; I chose Start Normally once, and then when my
machine froze up later, I went for Last Good Configuration, ansd this may be
the cause of the reversion to the defaults....
If it is of any consolation to anyone else, I am not having any further
difficulties with SP2 now; though I have to say that almost everyone I speak
to has found that bits have gone missing after the install, in one case,
Network Connections folder, or in my case sndvol32.exe and another file
related to the Volume Controls, which I had to manually reintegrate from a
floppy disc! minor annoyances, but significant to the average Windows user
with not much knowledge of systems....
I had to search for my name here to find my original posting, having not had
any notification of a reply to it, in spite of ticking the box to be
notified....
