I recently had to do a system recovery, and now my version of XP is an
extremely old one. I went to the update site to get it back up to speed, but
the new windows update site is unable to install the update software. It
scans my computer, I click "install now", it downloads up to 100%, then it is
unable to start up the page. It gives me error code 0x800B0100. I do not have
a firewall up, no anti-virus software, and it still does not work when I
change security settings.

I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. Now I'm trying to
get service pack 2 installed without any success. Haven't set up the
firewall and have antivirus software turned off. I have attempted to install
Service Pack 2 several times online but have gotten the same error as you.

You might try ordering the update on CD from Microsoft. When I ordered the
CD the website told me it would be 4-6 weeks for delivery, but I got it
within days.
Unfortunately when I try to install from the CD, I get a message that the
CAB file is corrupt. I'll be interested to try any suggestions.

I you're connected to the Internet with no firewall, then you have almost
certainly already been infected with any of a number of worms - some of
which will kill Windows Updates.

My recommendation - redo the reformat/reinstall, activate Internet
Connection Firewall (XP RTM/SP1) or Windows Firewall (SP2), then go straight
to Windows Updates, and try again.

I have been having similar issues with my system. thought for a while it was
hard drive related. Curious to find out about your config.

Mine is Athlon xp 2400+ on a gigabyte 7vrxp motherboard.
