Open IE. Tools/Internet Options, Programs tab. Click on Manage Add Ons and
disable Windows Genuine Advantage. Close IE for it to take effect. Open IE
again and go to Tools/Windows update and ignore the bubble that appears at
the bottom right of the browser telling you have disabled Windows Genuine
Advantage. Click on Custom. Once it shows you the downloads, download what
you want.
The advice Carey gave you is only designed to scare you into spending money
on a retail XP when, if his advice were sound (and it's not), you would
spend a lot less money buying a generic OEM version of XP.
Carey always assumes everyone is a thief and that the Windows Genuine
Advantage program is perfect and never fails. Why they gave him or her the
MVP status is beyond me and doesn't say much for the MVP program
