I'm new to Vista and haven't been able to figure out what the hell is
going on when I view files in Windows Explorer and or any common
dialog file list views (like save as or open).

First, I pretty much want to always no matter what to View, Details
but I haven't been able to use the Folder Options/View settings, in
particular "Reset Folders" and "Remember each folder's view settings"
to get all my folders to display in the Details view. What are the
steps to get this to work?

Next, something very odd seems to be going on when I do a "Save As" or
"Open" from almost any application. I want to see the "Date Modified"
or "Date" columns ALWAYS(!) and, well, of course the actual date for
the files in a Details view. But about half the time, for example if I
do "Save Page As" right now in Firefox and browse to my downloads
directory I see the "Date Taken" column (whatever the hell that is)
but not dates next to any of the files. I have changed this for some
directories to "Date Modified" or sometimes "Date" and i'll see the
column (not always some folders seem to forget) but no dates? I check
the view, it's Details. Then last night in Explorer I looked at a
directory and HALF(wtf?) the files showed dates the other half didn't
and they were just text file?!?! This can't be that hard? What do I
have to do to just see some form of "Date Modified" for ever file in a
directory for every directory?

and I doubt this is possible but I am so sick of starting Windows
Explorer and having it start in my Documents folder. Is there any way
to have it start in the last folder I was viewing? This has always
annoyed me since Windows 3.0.

thanks
mike

select c drive in explorers left pane
choose view details
select c drive in explorers left pane
choose organize folders and search options
choose view tab
apply to all folders

Not quite sure about the save as dialogue
