Newbie: Server questions

I want to build and setup my own home server, as I have some spare
hardware which I could use.
This is 4gb DDR3 ram, x2 500Gb Sata 2 HD's, Mid Tower Case and
Motherboard. I know I need a PSU etc but I am dealing with that.

I was thinking of using Raid 2 for the x2 HD's and whatever operating
system was suitable.

I want to have file and printer sharing, and to store backups and some
media, as well as files and photos on this server.

What would be the most suitable operating system if any or would winXP
be ok to use.
Also do I need to setup the HD's as Raid and if so do I need any other
hardware to accomplish this.

I am fairly PC savvy and have built many PC's and done more than my
share of installs over the years.

Depends what you plan to use the server for. For it to be an effective server you
would need either a SBS or a W3K or W8K. Like I said beforehand it all depends what
you want to use it for

Are you planning on AC or DC ???

Basically I want to use it for backups and storing files and media.
I'll be just putting files onto the server and reading from them, as
well as putting media files on the same drive and reading from them
occasionally.

What is SBS, and how do you mean AC or DC?
To me that's Alternating Current or Direct Current.

In the UK DC voltage is used in all home power situations as far as I am
aware, so yes I will be using DC power.

Then your home might be the only one running on DC power. According to
<http://users.telenet.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm> the UK uses
230 volts AC at 50 Hertz.
