Just went to Critical Updates (we have WinXPsp2) and saw the following
Critical Update which is a bit confusing to us. If we download it, could it
cause problems, or should we just go ahead and download it?
==========
Windows Update

To use this latest version of Windows Update, you will need to upgrade some
of its components. This version provides you with the following enhancements
to our service:
Express and custom installation: Choose only the most recent critical
updates or pick and choose from all available updates.
Smarter downloads: If downloading is interrupted, the process will start up
where it left off the next time you download that update.
Smaller downloads: Only the files your computer needs are downloaded,
saving download time and connection-speed costs.
One version: Only the most recent updates are offered to you.
Less clutter: You can now hide updates you don't want to see.
Update news: A News from Microsoft section on the Windows Update home page
displays tips and the latest information.

Hello Alice,

It sounds as if this is your first visit to the new V6 version of Windows Update. Go ahead and proceed with this.
The version 6 is better than the one before.

Tell it yes to download the latest controls.

Thank you.
Someone told us this update (KB892130) had something to do with our
verifying we had legitimate copies of WinXP running our system. We bought our
notebooks with WinXP installed. We know there are some MS certificates on
bottom of notebooks, but some of the wording is worn away and we fear if we
had to verify, we might not be able to supply the full key number (25 digits
we believe). That is what has us a bit nervous.

I've not ever had to enter any product key at Windows Update. You can relax on that issue. Go ahead and proceed forward.

Yes, that is about the Windows Genuine Advantage. (Though I don't remember the word "critical" being used on the screen.) Yup, just got my update & did NOT have to enter any key or such.
Alice, you are welcome.
I came back to advise you to make sure you right down your XP's product key & save it somewhere safe ---- before your notebook's tag is all worn down.
