These updates: Security Update for JView Profiler (KB903235) and Security
Update for Windows XP (KB901214) are very problematic. There are at least
half a dozen people on this newsgroup that experienced difficulties in
applying them. I am sure there are others.

Microsoft has to re-work the updates. All my updates prior to todate were
fine. I do not have Zonealarm installed just Windows Firewall and I am having
the same problem. The updates download, but fail to install.

To be frank, if there are only a dozen or so people having problems with
these two updates out of the millions of computers being updated, then
MS has done a pretty good job with the installation process. IMO.

If you will describe the problem you are having, perhaps someone here
can offer suggestions.

The problem I'm having is the update (KB903235) downloads, then I get a big
red X that say No Updates Were Installed
The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click
Review and install updates, then click INSTALL NOW again.
Security Update for JView Profiler (KB903235)

Over and over and over again, it just won't take.

First thing to do is to Restart the system. MS of late has been trying
to cut down on the number of Restarts needed on Windows systems, but
unfortunately that means there are often times when a Restart is a good
idea and it never gets mentioned and never happens. This is especially
true if you have recently switched from the V5 to the V6 MS update
methods.

Second is to clean up the system. Please do the following, in the order
listed:

1. Empty the default Temp and Tmp folders. By default the Temp folder
is located at "C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local
Settings\Temp" and the Tmp folder will be located whereever you created
it. Close all open programs and delete everything in those two folders.
Also delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder as it will
sometimes be used no matter the default.

2. If you have any WUTemp folders (they are Hidden) then delete them.

3. Open Control Panel, Internet Options, and on the General tab click
Delete Files, mark the option to delete Offline Content, and let that
complete.

4. Open My Computer, select the drive letter where you have Windows
installed, right-click and select Properties. On the first tab select
Disk CleanUp and mark all options except Compress old files. When that
is done, pick the Tools tab, and click the "Check Now..." tab to do a
scan of the drive. If you have the time, do a Defrag when that
completes. If you don't have the time now, be sure to remember to do
that at the end of the day/session and then again in about 48 hours.

5. After all that is done, Restart the system again. On the Start/Run
line enter "net stop wuauserv" and wait for the CMD window to close.
Then open the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete the
following sub-folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabs
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

6. In the Windows folder, check to see if you have one named
"$NtUninstallKB903235$" If you do, double-click this file to force an
Uninstall: C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB903235$\spuninst\spuninst .exe

7. Restart the computer one last time. DO NOT skip this step.

8. Last, start on this site and click the "Go to Microsoft Update"
button to install the latest version of the V6 Windows Update support
files, and when you get to the Microsoft Update screen do a Custom Scan,
then install the KB903235 item from there.

Can you explain the "didn't do it" part? Did you follow all the steps
I listed in the prior post? If so, what is the URL for the Windows
Update screen you are using?

What is the version number for wups.dll and for muweb.dll in your
System32 folder?

BTW, the 0x800700C1 error means that the .exe you were trying to use
isn't valid. Either corrupted during download or by something else. Is
your system clean of viruses?

I followed all the steps, twice. I did a virus update and scan, everything OK.
The url is
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us

The version number for both wups and muweb dll are 5.8.0.2469

If I try to install the update from the .exe, I get an "Error creating
process<C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator.DAD-ECD409B6997\IXp000.TMP\IEUPDATE.EXE
Q903235>. Reason: INNT\system32\advpack.dll
Which is the same error I get when I try to install MSN Messenger 7.0
