I would be most grateful to receive some guidance on how to achieve the
following.
In my house I have a server in the basement which is running Server 2003 R2
(SP2). I have a PC in my office, on which I made a clean install with Vista
Ultimate this week. I want to get this PC and user registered on the server
domain.
I am writing this here only after patient trying failed. My previous
installation was with WinXP Pro, and I somehow managed to solve this, but
that's some time ago. I am not an experienced domain manager; I forgot how I
did it.
Anyway -the difficulty I have i.a. was to register the PC itself. To just
indicate what I have been trying without success:
1.- Opened the window "View basic information about your computer".
2.- Under "computer name, domain, and workgroup settings", at the moment the
computer name is "PAPA" and the workgroup defaulted after the OS
installation to "WORKGROUP".
3.- Under "computer name, domain, and workgroup settings", I clicked "Change
settings". From there on however, whether I try to take the procedure under
"Network ID." or the one under "Change.", I always end up with the same
message complaining that this client should be ". configured to reach a DNA
server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain".
What am I doing wrong? If someone who is more knowledgeable than me could
take 5 minutes of his/her valuable time to return a step-by-step procedure
to me, (s)he would make me very happy.
TIA .
