Newly installed Vista x64 - Hard drive slow?

Last night I bought and installed Vista Home Premium (x64).
The installation went well but after an hour or so it seems the hard
drive just won't relax.
It's as if it's working overtime...IE7 has slowed along with opening
Windows Media Centre. I haven't tried much else.

I don't understand how it can just slow down

Could it be a simple driver fix? How do I find them?

In Task Manager the CPU and memory usageare both fine. Never really
goes above 10% with lots running.

Spec:
Asus T3-P5G065
Q6600
GeForce 8600GT
4GB 800MHz Ram (2x2GB)
Maxtor SATA 500GB UDMA 300

Thanks,
Ian

It's likely the Windows Search ( Indexing ) service is cataloging the
content on the drive. While it is supposed to be a "Background" type
of service it will impact overall performance until the index is built.

If you do not plan to use or need extensive searching capabilities
then you can use Services.Msc to set Windows Search to disabled
and stop the service from running.

That sounds about right for a fresh installtion of Windows Vista x64.
My advice to you is to leave the machine runnig overnight to give the
indexer a chance to finish (I've done this maybe once every two months
or so). If you complete a full Windows Update (excluding the optional
Language Packs) you will get the performance and reliability updates
that you are looking for. Repeat WU until it say there are no more
updates available.

I do search for files occasionally but i guess i could turn it off if
need be.
How long will this "Indexing" last? The sound of my hard drive working
overtime is annoying the hell out of me
At the moment the hard drive has 90GB of files (mainly media).

Thanks again,
Ian
