The software maker said it took in $4.29 billion in profits, or 45 cents per
share, on revenue of $13.76 billion for the three months ending September
30. As for Vista, the company said it saw double-digit growth in multi-year
agreements by businesses and saw "the vast majority" of consumers opting for
a premium version of the operating system.

Microsoft saw particularly strong results in the Windows client business,
where revenue grew 25 percent in the quarter. That was aided by overall
strong PC sales as well as gains the company made in reducing piracy rates.
Healy said that reduction in piracy rates accounted for about 5 percentage
points of the the growth.

What is this group turning into m.p.w.vista.advocacy?!?

--
Priceless quotes in m.p.w.vista.general group:
http://protectfreedom.tripod.com/kick.html

"Fair use is not merely a nice concept--it is a federal law based on
free speech rights under the First Amendment and is a cornerstone of the
creativity and innovation that is a hallmark of this country. Consumer
rights in the digital age are not frivolous."

It's general, it fits. What we could do without is the constant Linux
advocacy, which is of course well off topic.

If a user found there way here, they're not looking to switch to Linux, but
don't let that stop anyone from wasting their time.

Essentially every new computer on the market is bundling the Vista
cockiedoodie..
maybe that is part of the issue.

A couple of manufacturers now offer XP upon request, as there have been so
many
complaints about Vista.

It will be interesting to see how many Asus eee's are sold when its
introduction is
official in November. Early indications are that over four million units
are committed
by purchasers. While Vista may be offered as an alternative, let's also
see how many
of the purchasers stick with Linux. (I cant wait to get my hands on one...)

Millions of Ford Pintos with Firestone tires were sold too. Your point?
Hell, the heroin business makes more than Microsoft does, as do arms
sales. That doesn't make any of these sales a good thing.

The true test is after new Vista owners use the OS for awhile and how
many of them revert to XP, a MAC or Linux.

"A couple of manufacturers now offer XP upon request..."
That statement seems a little misleading.
That is not a change and nothing new.
Dell, Toshiba and possibly other major OEMs continue to offer Windows
XP as well as many local shops as they always have.
they never stopped selling Windows XP.
This is the same as was done 6 years ago at the release of Windows XP
and previous operating systems before them.
