newsgroup messages downloads extremely slow after update

I just downloaded the latest updates for my xp home system and ever since
the messages in the newsgroups take forever to download? do you think if I
uninstall the windows update that says sp2 behind it, that it might cure
this or will my computer completly puke out on me? any help would surely be
appreciated.
