I am switching from a Macintosh to Windows Vista. What is a good usenet
newsreader program? Also, other than Outlook 2007, what do people
recommend for checking email?

Vista comes with an email client that also does newsgroups,
Windows Mail. I don't like it.

Windows Live Mail is the newest client from Microsoft.
It's okay for email, but I dislike it for newsgroups.

I use Outlook for email and Thunderbird for newsgroups.
Thunderbird is also a good email application.

For email I would also suggest the free Thunderbird, I think Microsoft
Mail that comes with Vista is good for that too. But for reading and
posting to discussion groups I suggest the free version of Forte' Agent
and for downloading binaries I suggest Grabit. Use the right tools for the
job.

I'll check them out. My ThinkPad comes with free Lotus Notes. What do
folks think of Lotus Notes?

The Windows Live Mail beta looks interesting too. Computer arrives
tomorrow and I'm anxious to try all of this out.

HINT: avoid beta software. Even RTM software from MS is iffy. Just
look at Vista!!

When I used Lotus notes as part of a corporate system I thought it was
awful.
Slow, buggy and used huge amounts of disk space.
The problem is Lotus notes is not an email system.. its a document
management system.
Someone bolted an email bit onto it and not very well.
Of course it is now two versions on and it may be better but I doubt it.
Unless your company uses Loutish notes I would choose something else.

Do you have M$ office? Outlook (not outlook express) is good.

My advice is to stick with Windows Mail, which comes with Vista, for
both E-mail and Newsgroups. You don't have to use it forever, but your
life will be complicated enough getting started with Vista without
also adding additional third-party programs.

Once you get comfortable with using Vista, if you'd like to explore
alternatives to Windows Mail, fine. But rather than ask the advice of
other people, what I recommend is that you try several of the
available choices (most are either freeware or shareware that comes
with a free trial) and see which meet *your* needs the best.

Hmmm. Good advice. I suspect that there will be a learning curve so
maybe Windows Mail will be fine at the outset. I assume it is
pre-installed in Vista? Even the 64 bit version that I'm getting? The
ThinkPad arrives tomorrow and I am psyched!!
