NNPT issues in Vista using Windows mail and Thunderbird

Hello,

I have Vista 32Bit (Business). I use Windows Mail for email and it
works great. I decided to setup my ISPs news server (They use
news.netins.net) and It connects for about five seconds in Windows mail
and Thunderbird then disconnects. With this problem it never even
downloads the list of groups.

This is actually a bit better than what I started out with. At first I
only had Windows Mail installed and I was getting the error "The TCP/IP
connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server." after it
connected for about 1 second. So I called my ISP. They didn't seem to
have a clue about that error. Actually the guy I was talking to didn't
even know the news server name till I told him. They say almost no one
uses their news server anymore. Ok then.
So after I educated HIM a little bit about what the news server they
use is he talked to his lead tech a few times (maybe he knows more...?)
they decided to troubleshoot it more and for me to wait awhile and try
again. I then installed Thunderbird to use to test with as well.

After 2 hours I tried again and ever since then it does what I wa
saying at the first. It connects for about five seconds but when it
shows the box where news groups should be there are none in the box.
Thunderbird is the same way.

I called them back and they put in a trouble ticket because they didn't
know what else to do. Over 24 hours later they called back saying they
believe nothing is wrong on their side (again saying almost no one uses
the news server) and they think it is a Vista issue.

I have gone into the Windows Firewall (only firewall I currently use)
and setup Windows Mail in the exception list. I also setup port 119.

According to the tech I talked to their news server doesn't need me to
login with my username/password. They control who can login another way.
I tried it both ways though.

I did try switching to UUEncode under the plain text settings for news
but I don't know how that would matter since I am not have a problem
sending. I guess I though maybe if they blocked MIME I might as well
get around that now.

So I don't know what to do. I can't get the list of newsgroups.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like your ISP is lying. Try aioe.org. No user name or password
needed.

The fact that you're able to use this server indicates that you know
your way around an NNTP client and probably have things set correctly
on your end.

The "other way" they control access to their NNTP server is probably
that only computers on their network are allowed to access it. That's
the usual way this is done. It means that if you are using a wi-fi
connection in a coffeeshop or airport, or a connection in a hotel, you
won't be able to use your ISPs NNTP server.

But assuming you're at home and connecting through your ISP, it sounds
to me that you're OK and they don't have anybody that knows how to
take care of their NNTP server.

It said to me "You have no permission to talk. Goodbye"

So if that's the same message it may well be a permissions setting at
their end. msnews.microsoft.com should work so if the OP has that
working it's a pretty safe bet INS have got something wrong That was
with Thunderbird BTW.

Ok well instead of posting via Google I am now posting using
Thunderbird on my home PC. And I am using msnews.Microsoft.com

The Microsoft news server had ZERO issues getting the list of newsgroups
and assuming you see this message the process sending out via
Thunderbird to msnews.Microsoft.com via my ISP works.

I am still confused though.

My ISP news server still doesn't work in Thunderbird. Same old story. It
connects in Thunderbird for a few seconds but no newsgroups in the list.

I setup msnews.Microsoft.news in Windows Mail and (of course) no
login/password) And it connects for 1 second and gives me

"The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server"

Server msnews.Microsoft.com
Protocol NNTP
Port 119
SSL:0
Code: 800ccc0f

Hooray....

Anyway so Windows Mail is still stuck. So why would the Microsoft News
Server work in Thunderbird using my ISP but not in Windows Mail. Of
course I still have the problem of news.netnews.net not working in either.

AS for aioe.org Thunderbird is downloading the list of groups right
now. But in Windows mail I got

"The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server"

This is really getting on my nerves.

My ISP News Server works in nothing so far but other things work in
Thunderbird.

Am I missing something in Windows Mail and/or Vista that could cause this?

Thanks again for your time.

Is your AV or firewall blocking port 119 ?
As a quick test, you could temporarily disable one at a time and see if you
can connect.
