For those of you lamenting the end of microsoft.public NNTP newsgroups, and
not particularly looking forward to using web forums, check out:

https://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums

This is free, it is actually still being developed and worked on, and it
does work. I can't say I love it, but it is a solution of sorts. It works
with the MS newsreaders and Forte Agent, and quite possibly others.

Right, so MS is closing down their news servers, because nobody wants
to use them anyway. Then offer an experimental software for us to run,
should we still want news access?

What am I missing here?

It works with XanaNews as well, I suspect it will work with most news
readers. Version 1 was unbelievably slow, I haven't tried 1.1.

That's an amazing invention but who would ever want to use one of them?

Now we just need Microsoft to install this software onto one of their own
servers, say msnews.microsoft.com perhaps (since that's about to be idle),
and we can all carry on as we are.

1.1 is acceptable. Just, but definitely way better than 1.0. I couldn't run
1.0. I can run 1.1.

No major disagreement, Bo. Except that the only real reason this software
(which is release quality, we're told) exists is because people insisted
that we simply would not do forums without it. I actually don't care about
NNTP one way or another. But I do care about efficiency and asynchronous
use. NNTP is one solution, and one a lot of folks can take advantage of.

I guess MS will not accept a (plain) NNTP-login,
but insists on a LiveID login.

Well, the NNTP protocol supports authentication, so logically it could
take in Passport^H^H^HLiveID details and pass 'em through...

I thought I could use the NNTP Bridge with Windows Mail. What is the deal
with LiveID?
Thanks,
Dick

So naturally it does not. Instead you have to authenticate in the NNTP
bridge app, then connect unauthenticated from your NNTP client.
