I'm having a problem with my new laptop on my network. I have two other
computers on this network, one is also running Vista and the other is running
XP. The two other computers can see the new laptop on the network screen,
but any time you try to click on it, says that the access is denied. Any
fixes on this of any sort?

Next time you have a network question try the vista.network group.
Does the shared documents on the new laptop give open permission for
Everyone to access it? Generally you'll get this access denied if
there are no open shares, that is ones anyone can get to, but rather
protected shares where you need to give a logon and password to get to
it. If in Windows Explorer you manually type in the path to the share
can you get to it, e.g. \\laptop\documents? Does it pop up a request
for login name and password? If you then put in the logon name and
password of the new laptop does it let you in? That would indicate you
have protected shares. Ideally protected shares are a better way to go
anyway. You can map a network drive and specify the logon name and
password and that should stay enabled from boot to boot. How to check
permissions and such you can find by browsing around a little or
looking in the help file, or respond here with what you can't find.

Below is how to Network XP and Vista.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords (passwords can be different) on ALL computers in your Network) If
you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing
Wizard to include Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network
set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it(redoing the Wizard seems to
work for XP machines!).

In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network”
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File
and Printer Sharing.
