No Alarm on Low or Critical Battery

It has been reported in several of the forums that it is impossible
to get an alarm to sound. HP users have reported this, and others
(such as Dell) as well. I have a new Compaq F756NR that has this
problem.
It seems unclear as to what is at fault: Vista or the hardware.
Can someone suggest a solution? It is annoying for a computer
to suddenly go into hibernation without warning.
Thanks.
Frank

My wife and I have Toshiba Satellites (A200) and they have the same problem!
We are very keen to find a solution as they suddenly reach a critical
battery level and turn off without an sound warning. If one doesn't have many
windows open on the desktop, one sometimes gets a temporary glassy warning
box - but not always...

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 that has this problem as well. I'm a big Trekky
fan, so I have my computer set to play a red-alert sound when the battery is
low. I was disappointed when the sound didn't play.
