I am beginning to wonder about not only the make-up of Windows, but of MS
itself and especially the "experts" they employ.

I have posted several times, and others a hundred or more, problems with not
being able to update windows XP any longer.

There were few suggestions given, all tried, none worked, and each day
others writing with the same problem, but even MS does not know how to
correct their own errors.

Makes other systems seem more and more likely the route to take.

I wrote to MS about this, they responded once with 3 solutions saying they
KNEW one would take care of the problem, tried all 3 and no help, them
responded back and that has been 5-6 days ago, they have not even given
another response.

Makes ya wonder...

You can ask for help right here in this newsgroup.
All it takes is a little effort on your part to compose
a "Good Post".

Actually, all it would take would be for Microsoft to make a "Good OS"

Bill Gates is one of the worlds great philanthropists.. and he was/is a
major player in bringing computing to the masses.. what is your contribution
to the world other than gripe about Microsoft?

And re. the solutions that they gave.. how accurate was the info that you
gave to them?.. because any remedy given to you would be based upon what you
told them..

We also have no proof that you tried their solutions in proper fashion.. I
am left wondering too.. mainly about your ability to put across a scenario
accurately..

Ok.. I have quit wondering about that.. I have better things to do with my
time..

And I have always been a supporter of MS, Gates, the whole bit........but,
I have posted HERE Carey, several times the problem, have read NUMEROUS
others posts with similar problems, wrote to MS support, and still I cannot
get updates automatically or manual.

When they gave me solutions that did not work, I followed the instructions
to let them know this did not work, received confirmation from them saying
my "case has been accepted" and then they NEVER got back with me with any
solutions.

As far as accuracy on my information, well it was simple. I am running
XPHome, SP1. I have not been receiving any automatic updates, so I go to
download and install all critical (9 remaining) updates, all are downloaded
fine (window displays "done" after each download), then when install starts
ALL say installation failed.

Have followed every example of every solution I have read and still same
thing.

Here is what I get:

The following updates failed to be installed successfully:
a.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)
b.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB890047)
c.. Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472)
d.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781)
e.. Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(KB867282)
f.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113)
g.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333)
h.. Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250)
i.. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2005 (KB890830)

Once, but only once I also received a "you do not have enough disk space"
error andf being I have 30 GB free on main drive, 38 GB free on second, I
hardly believe that to be the case.

You tell me what else I am supposed to say, and I will surely give you any
information I have.

All I want is a solution, the same as numerous others that have posted here
similar problems.

I feel sure I will get a solution from one of you that was quick to snap
back and point out all my mistakes.....tell me, how do I correct this and
again be able to download updates...........

and I will, to the one that can help, be greatfull.

Just grabbing at straws a little here for now, but have you tried the
Windows Update Trouble-shooter accessible from Help and Support within the
Windows Update site?

I understand that some are not receiving automatic updates even if set so to
do, but can at least get them manually..

The only other suggestions that I have at this time is to run 'sfc
/scannow', do a repair install on XP, scan for spyware, malware, scumware..
try running McAfee Stinger..

I wish that I could offer more hope to you and others..

Carey,

Before offering that advice I think you should try a search
and find out if this expression of frustration is justified.

What he has done wrong is first had the misfortune to be mixed up with
a bunch of "Me too!"s, been unable to follow up on some suggestions
or not stay in one thread, when he did get some useful help.

For example, here is his log

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...1-4674fd03ca9c

(Web interface search for
biker-t
)

Note that this was apparently in response to Taurarian's suggestion
that he post his log. If he had stayed in that thread we probably
wouldn't be discussing his problem like this.

Unfortunately it looks to me like another one of those mysterious
SID problems.

<extracts>
2005-03-10 11:36:01-0500 852 458 _WTSQueryUserToken failed with hr =
800704dd.
2005-03-10 11:36:01-0500 852 458 Failed to find token for SID
S-1-5-21-1123561945-1229272821-682003330-1004 with hr = 80240018.
2005-03-10 11:36:01-0500 852 458 Could not impersonate the user. Failed
with 0x80240018. Will continue in LS context to get proxy settings.

2005-03-10 11:45:28-0500 852 370 GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with hr
0x800704dd
2005-03-10 11:45:28-0500 852 370 WU client failed installing updates with
error 0x80240020
</extracts>

The main idea that I have had with these is to ask the user if they have
done any customization of the permissions of any of the standard
background accounts, e.g. System.

Since this symptom occurs during the install phase of the update
the simplest workaround would be to just use WU to get a list of
the updates that it thinks you should have and then download and
install them manually (assuming appropriate permissions on the
user account). If the download phase is also done there may
also be the possibility of simply running the downloads manually
but that would be harder to explain how to do even if it is possible.

And Robert..........

I followed up on every suggestion and ONLY reposted the need for help after
the thread had obviously died and NO further responses or suggestions being
made.

The only think I know of that was done about the time that I stopped being
able to update the windows XP, was I went through an extensive cleaning of
lots of spy-ware and malware. I was told maybe when I deleted all activeX
references in the registry it could have messed up the MS site recognizing
the copy of windows being legit, but know nothing about any of this.

I just am terribly frustrated and want a solution.
