No Audio After Downloading and Installing Updates

I am running Windows XP Home on a Compaq Presario 2100. On 9/14/2006 I
installed a series of Windows updates. One of those updates was KB920872
(which had something to do with audio). After the updates, I have no audio
capability on my computer. The "mute" button is lit, and the audio buttons
will not work. On Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, "No Audio Devices"
is listed under the volume tab.

When I was installing the updates, my computer froze and I had to hold down
the power button to get it to turn off and reboot. After rebooting, I
contiunued with the installation. The Windows Update page says that I
installed 5 different updates on that date, but the Control Panel, Add or
Remove Programs icon only lists 3 of those 5 updates as being on my computer.
Any suggestions on what I might need to do to get the sound/audio to be
functional again. My initial thoughts were to try and uninstall the KB920772
since it had something to do with audio, however that update is not list on
my Add or Remove Programs list, even thought the Windows Update site list
that update as being on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried using System Restore to roll the system back to just
before the update was installed ?

Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder)
Open the $NtUninstallKB920872$ folder
[If it is not present then the update is not installed.
But, by the sound of your post (no pun intended) it appears that it has
installed, albeit not correctly.]
Then open the spuninst folder and run spuninst.exe

IF the folder is not present, then suggest you try this as posted by
Eric Brodish, MS -

NOTE the space between the e and /
Hopefully, that will get the update installed properly and overwrite the
faulty installation.

MowGreen, thanks very much for your help. I went to the hidden folders and
found that the uninstall folder for KB920872 was there. I uninstalled the
KB920872.

I immediatley got the yellow shield icon that indicated that I had new
updates to install. The new update was KB920872. I re-installed the KB920872
update . After restarting the computer, the audio functions were all working
OK. Looks like the problem was with the original installation of the KB920872
update.

Thanks again for your excellent help!!
