My computer performed automatically yesterday the following updates to
my system ( XP Professional SP2 ) :

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
(KB931768)

Update for Windows XP (KB930916)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2007 (KB890830)

Following reboot I have no Audio play back during video or audio
playback

in Windows Media Player or Itunes or RealPlayer

I have Creative SB Live sound card and it is installed properly and is
recognized by the computer etc.... clearly the system sounds and
beeps etc are working so the card must be..

specifically no audio during video or mp3 play back

Please advise anyone...

thanks in advance

regards

Hi there,

Try system restore in safe mode to a point previous to the problem, monitor
your WU downloads and skip any driver update(s).

Best regards,

I'm having the same issue. I'm running Windows XP MCE 2005. I installed
several optional updates today. After installing my PC had no sound output
of any kind. I thought it might be a sound card issue, but I have 2
different brands of sound cards on my machine. Neither one will work even
though they are both enabled. I restored my machine to the last restore
point, but now Windows keeps crashing on startup. Windows is now completly
unstable and I am running in safe mode. I still have no sound on either card.
I have checked all the volume and muting controls. Both cards say they are
enabled and functioning in the device manager. Whatever the problem it
cannot be fixed with a restore or driver rollback.

For a possible fix to this problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

2. (not for Vista) Download and install update KB927891 version 3:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>

If the first of these produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

After the fixes have been installed, doing a Microsoft Update or Automatic
Update might still take some time (though not as much as before) and
processor and disk usage, but it should not lock out user-level interaction
with the system and applications, so it should not be such an inconvenience.

Windows Audio runs in the same svchost process as Windows Updates, so the
problems are connected.

I was finally able to fix my problem by reinstalling the drivers for my sound
blaster audigy by using the original driver disc that came with the card.
This was after 3 hours of trying different rollbacks and restores .

As I said before a driver rollback on the card had no effect, and restoring
my pc to a pre-update version made it completely unstable for some reason.
It was as though the update corrupted the drivers for both my sound cards.
I haven’t reinstalled the drivers for the secondary sound card, but I bet it
will work again as soon as I do.

These were the updates that downloaded when the problem started. I don't
see any in common with the original post so I'm not certain they are related.

FWIW, today 2007-05-14, I updated XP - the four critical updates applied
without a hitch, but after trying to apply an optional hardware update:

~ Creative - Sound - Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM) ~

(My sound card is an older, apx 3 to 4 year old Creative Labs Audigy.)

My monitor went black, and the box rebooted to a black screen. The fix in my
case was:

~ F8 > Last known Good Configuration. ~

Just posting this in case some other poor soul runs into this mess.

Regards.

I have the same problem, but I am unable to determine exactly when and what
download has shut my audio off. I have a SoundMax card, and I reloaded the
driver, but I am still not getting any sound. The system shows the card, and
tells me that it it operating "normally", but still NO sound. I get no audio
at all, not even "system sounds". The "Sounds and Audio Devices" tab is
telling me that there is NO audio device installed. What the heck? Got any
ideas?
