no automatic updates

even the automatic updates in the control panel is on-recomended the icon of
automatic updates on he taskbar never apopears so i can download updates
manually only. please help.

What Windows Version?

For Vista - If you want to check for updates manually, follow these steps:
Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking
Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Check for updates.
