I have a Sony Vaio computer (model PCV-RX550) from 2002. I upgraded to
Windows XP SP3 (from SP2) yesterday after downloading the latest update from
Microsoft website. The update went smoothly but now the computer is on
constant reboot cycle. It would not even boot in safe mode.

Is there a way I can restore my computer to pre-SP3 update?

Here is the error message on the screen (if I turn off Auto reboot):
-------------------start message ------------------
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you hav eseen this Stop error screen, restart the
computer. If this screen appears again, follow theses steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in
the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for
driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove
or diable comonents, restart you computer, press F8 to select Advanced
Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There no driver updates available from Sony website for this model. I
wonder if the best way for me it to revert back to SP2. But how can I
restore to pre-SP3 update? My computer came with OEM restore disks. Those
disks want to only format the hard drive and install the original XP sp1 and
programs to get it back to factory settings.

Thanks for any pointers!

Mukesh Kumar

Why wasn't SP3 installed over a year ago?

See
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
(WinXP SP3)."]

Possible workaround: Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to
INTELPMM.OLD.

Other references include:

• Error message after you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other
than an Intel processor to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or to Windows XP
Service Pack 3: "STOP: 0x0000007E":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953356

• Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors:
Go to www.hp.com | Search for "sp37394.exe" (w/out quotes) | Should take you
to this download page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support for WinXP SP3 was
available from 14 April 2008 thru May 2009. Such support will cost you
US$59 per incident now. [You snooze, you lose.]

I just got home from work and booted my computer up, I had the same response as this user(Mukesh Kumar) has had. I tried all the safe modes, none of that worked, it just kept rebooting. I then hit delete after the fourth time rebooting, one thing I noticed that was odd was that when looking at my harddrives it showed no master or slave drive, but a fourth drive...who knows. I exited this setup screen and the computer miraculiously booted with no other problems. Im running a virus scan with Malwarebytes...it has just come back with no malicious viruses... so now I'm kinda in limbo. This reminds me of south park the movie, "fuc%ing windows 98" lol. I hope windows lets us know something soon, because now Im afraid to shut this computer down. Sorry for my shi%*y grammar.-steve
