Ever since I installed Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
(KB976749), I don't have any computer sounds. I also can not play sounds in
web pages such as YouTube or Adobe Flash. My speakers do work - I can play
music and I can use Skpe. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

- Uninstall the update that you think broke it.
- List the KB###### for said update here.
- Install the latest drivers for your audio device.
- Explain what you mean by "My speakers do work", do you actually mean the
physical devices - the speakers themseves when hooked to other devices - or
do you mean that you still can play *some* sounds (like MP3 and Skype
conversations) through the speakers when connected to the computer?

1. Uninstall KB976749 & reboot.

2. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

3. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

4. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB976749 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

5. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
