No "Contacts List" View on Main Screen?

Still using XP on my desktop but bought a laptop with Win 7 and WLM. Can
NOT figure out a way (layout) that will put my contact list on the main
screen like I have in XP. In XP I don't have to leave the main screen to
choose a contact. Is there anyway to configure this in WLM?
Thanks,
Monica

No, that's not possible. But there are various ways to bring up the
contacts, not just the obvious one of clicking on the Contacts icon.
Start a new message or reply to an existing message, then click on To.
Or simply start entering a portion of the recipient's name or email
address in the To box and it will auto-complete.

I may be misunderstanding your question, Monica. However, if you are in WLM
and have the same version I have, you click on email message and when the
form for a new message comes up, click on add. You will get your contact
list and your message form will still be there. If this isn't what you
want, then, sorry I couldn't help.

Lois, in OE, you could choose to have your contacts list viewable on the
main window/screen. Choosing a contact to create a new message was as easy
as double clicking that contact or right click and choose send email. Fewer
steps, better productivity. That's what I was trying to set up in WLM but
it can't be done. Thanks tho.

OK, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. To send an email from WLM, one
must go thru 4-6 clicks to send an email (depending on the method used and
not including auto-fill.) Right? So productivity went from a single double
click on a contact's name that was on OE's main screen to 4-6 clicks &
multiple screens? SURELY I'm missing something here. I've used the method
of clicking on the contacts icon and starting with the "New" button on the
toolbar.

No, not wrong, and you may be missing something. You may find it quicker and easier just to start typing in the To... box. When you
open a message compose window (by pressing Ctrl-N for a New message, Ctrl-R to Reply or Ctrl-F to Forward, for example), focus is
already in the To... box, so no clicking is needed before you start typing. As you do, WLMail will present a list of matching
entries in your contacts list. You can start typing a contact's nickname, first name, last name, company, e-mail address or any word
you've put in the Notes field for that contact. So, if you type bil, for example, the list that appears will include
a.. everyone whose Nickname starts with Bil, e.g. Billyboy
b.. everyone whose First name starts with Bil, e.g. Bilbo Baggins
c.. everyone whose Last name starts with Bil, e.g. Jim Bilko
d.. everyone whose Company name starts with Bil, e.g. Billingsgate Market
e.. everyone whose E-mail address starts with bil or has bil straight after a period or the '@' symbol, e.g. 'bilbo at
hotmail.com' or 'jim at billingsgate.com' or 'jim.bilko at hotmail.com'
f.. everyone who has a (non-trivial) word in the Notes field starting with bil, e.g. 'Malaria and bilharzia expert'
g.. every category a word in whose name starts with Bil, e.g. Friends of Billingsgate Market
That could be a long list, but you might be lucky and spot the one you want straight away. If you don't, type the next letter - bilb
would remove Billyboy, Jim Bilko, Billingsgate Market and the bilharzia expert from the list, leaving only Bilbo Baggins and 'bilbo
at hotmail.com' (there will probably only be one entry, if these two are the same contact). With practice, this is much quicker than
scrolling through a list of names. You'll seldom have to type more than three or four characters.

Most of the emails I send are replies, so there's no looking up
of contacts. For a new message, it takes me a total of 4 clicks.
So, in exchange for a couple more clicks, I gained a lot more
screen real estate for seeing the message list and reading
messages in the preview pane.

Even when I had OE I never displayed the contacts on the left.
Microsoft keeps tabs on how its programs are used, and
apparently very few used the option of having the contacts list
on the left, so that's why they did away with it.

?Everything MS has done by way of new versions of programs (like all the
Live products) as well as operating systems, have all progressively required
more clicks to do the same tasks. Their developers think that dropping
simple and easy features and replacing them with complicated and involved
features is the way to go. One only needs to look at the mess they made of
Windows Explorer (compared to previous versions) to see what I mean.
