No desktop during SP2 install after screensaver is activated

I have attempting to install SP2 for several days now and on each occasion
the following happens:

When I leave my PC for a few minutes during install, my screensaver is
activated. nothing abnormal there.

However, when I then move my mouse to go back to my desktop, all I see is my
wallpaper - no taskbar or anything else. Nothing responds after this. Only
way of getting out of it is by switching PC off and on.

Anyone any ideas what's wrong?

I've no idea of things, but would it help turning your screensaver off?
I was burning a recovery disc on my new computer (needed help) and was told
it would stop burning to the disc if the screensaver came on. I'm clueless,
but maybe???
