I have a 2-month ols DELL with Windows Vista installed that has worked well
so far. Now, I have lost the display. When I start, the computer boots
normally, even in safe mode, microsoft is starting and when it should display
the startup screen, it's completely blank. Only the mouse arrow shows.
What can I do? Is this a software problem?

Could be a problem with your video card, I would suggest you contact Dell
and let them check it out for you if the system is under warranty.

See the following article.

When you start a Windows Vista-based computer, the system may stop
responding (hang) at a black screen:

How come files become corrupted so easily on Windoze? Is it the NTFS
filesystem it uses? Why can't Microsoft get at least that part right? BTW,
fix your top posting and don't look like such an idiot when it comes to
Usenet.

Cheers.

Thanks. This is what DELL suggests as well. When I try to repair, it says
that no error was found. No restore point is seen, either.
However, I would like to save data on my disk first. Is there any way?

Apparently my reply did not get posted, so I send it again:

Thanks. I got the same suggestion from DELL. When I boot from the CD, I got
a normal display, but found that I could not repair (no problem found) and
could not go to a previous restore point (no previous restore point found!).
Could you please tell me how I could save data before re-installing Vista?
Unfortunately, I had not created a separate partition.

Unfortunately, saving your data will be a problem in this situation since
you have no way to access the data.

Depending on how important that data is, you may want to purchase another
hard drive to replace the current drive. Reinstall the OS on the new drive
and then install the original drive as a slave. You can then access the data
that is on the original drive from within the new installation.

I had this exact problem after installing an Nvidia graphics card - worked
fine for a day and then the problem began. Just wanted to note that booting
to the Vista CD and then using System Restore corrects the problem as well.
If no restore points are shown, make sure you select the option to show
restore points more than five days old.

If you have no other options, then buying another hard drive, as suggested,
is probably your best bet.

Good luck.

I have this exact same problem right now. I also have HP total care on this
computer and can get in it through a command prompt. Is there any way to
replace whatever file is corrupt through the command prompt access?
