Every program i download refuses to run.
I downloaded the drivers for my wired 360 pad which came in a
self-extracting .exe from the Microsoft website and when i execute it i get
the error:
" ....... has stopped working. please wait while windows finds a
solution......"
It never finds a solution and this happens with everything i download. I've
tried the Opera Browser install, a Codec Pack, and a few others and all give
me the same error.
Also when i download windows updates they always fail because the installers
can't run.
I've checked all the usual things UAC & DEP are correctly configured. If i
download the programs on my XP machine then transfer them over with my USB
stick they work fine....... does anyone have any ideas as to why this could
be happening?
I've been searching the net for answers for 2 days now and i've still not
found a solution. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Are you logged on as administrator?

I don't know if Vista works this way but under XP you had to logon with an
'admin' level account to install applications.

I'd have thought Vista was even more strict in this regard.

You sure this is not coming into play and is stopping you from running an
exe of some sort that was downloaded from a foreign computer?

Hi,

Thanks for the replys. I am logged in as an Admin and i've unblocked the
files before running them, i also downloaded them to my desktop.

It's behaving like it's crashing as soon as it's executed, it's very odd. I
should have mentioned that this is a clean fresh install of vista ultimate
with only Nod32 AV installed (other than device drivers). It's also a quad
core processor and 32bit install.

Before the download starts, when it says Run or Save, click on Run instead of
Save, then Run again. If this doesn't help, it may be an
Ownership/Permissions issue or broken installation debris may be blocking
your downloads and installs.

Install/Uninstall Problems
Until you clean your system of any broken install or incomplete uninstall
debris, you won't be able to install a new program. Vista uninstaller does a
very poor job of removing all parts of a program. Sometimes a proprietary
removal tool can help, but even these will leave blocking files and registry
entries on your system.

You can do a manual uninstall with the help of Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility, but the best way to get rid of all remnants of a program, failed
download and install, or failed uninstall is using Smarty Uninstaller. You
can access Smarty Uninstaller, a number of proprietary removal tools and
instructions for doing a manual uninstall at the tutorial link below.

Take Ownership/Permissions
Even running as Administrator may leave you without permissions to modify
some files or folders, even ones that you have downloaded and installed. To
access or modify (copy, delete, rename) files or folders you can take
Ownership of (in your Username) and grant yourself Full Control permissions
of the files or folders in question described in the following tutorial.

To avoid having to do this individually for hundreds of files, Take
Ownership of large branches like Program Files folder, Users folder, or
Windows folder, and grant yourself Full Control of the folder, all subfolders
and files contained in the folder. In the case of Program Files, you would
have full access to all your programs. In the case of Users folder, you
would have full access to your Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents, etc. In
the case of Windows folder you would have full access to your OS, including
Windows Installer.

Windows Explorer Run As Administrator
Another way to gain access to modify files and folders includes going to the
Start button, typing in Windows Explorer, right-clicking on this and
selecting Run As Administrator. You should then have "elevated privileges"
to do whatever you wish to files in Windows Explorer.

Unlocker Program
There is also a program called Unlocker that you can use to gain access to
modify files and folders.

I discovered that this was actually caused by my wireless adapter. The
drivers worked with vista but not 100%. Updated them from the website and
all working.

Thanks for you help!

It's all about who is sitting behind the wheel and is doing the driving.
