"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page."
WinXP64-bit SP2. All the relevent services are started (Automatic Updates,
BITS). The only recent change is installing IE8.
already tried this routine:
net.exe stop wuauserv
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv
& reboot.
No change.
Very difficult to look up by error number as none is provided.

Finally, the WindowsUpdate.log gives no clue - it looks just fine(!?):

Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one?

Error message when you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web
site on a Windows XP-based computer: "Windows Update has encountered an
error and cannot display the requested page"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914226

How do I reset Windows Update components?
