No files found during Search in vista

Hi!

Vista don't find files that are obviously in the folder searched!

Setup:

I have a Vista computer with two users, me (Administrator) and my
wife
(Standard user) I transferred all files from my old computer by
logging in to my new computer over the network and sending the files
from my old computer.


Execution:

When standing in a folder (Documents) full of files, I type the
letter
"a" in the search box. No files found!

(There are files both starting with and containing an "a" in that
folder.) I tried the search in my users Document folder, and my wife
in her users Document folder.


Solution???

I read some newsgroups and did a full Indexing from C:. This solved
the problem for me, but not for my wife! May it have with file
ownership to do? My guess is that the files are owned by Guest due to
my file transfer, and a user cannot search an other users files. (?)


Can I check if this assumption is correct?
If it is, can I fix it?
Any other suggestions about what the problem may be, and how to fix
it?

Take ownership of the files. You can see them as a Admin but a Standard
user wont see them. Taking ownership of the files will resolve this. But
you must take ownership as a standard user. That way she will be able to
access them. If you take ownership of them as the Admin she will be able to
see them but not modify them.

She can see them, access them and write to them. But the search does
not find any files in her directories.

Se can see them, open them and write to the files, but the seach
cannot find them!

If that is the case then they are not part of the group of files that are
being indexed which controls the search.

My user, the Administrator, did set up an indexing from C: (I read
that as a possible solution in a forum).
When entering the control panell from her user, the same indexing
alternative seems to have propagated and C: is the indexing folder
also in her view of the control panel.

Do you have any tip how I can "probe" my system to find more clues
what may be wrong? Any tests I can do whos result will give more
insight about what can be wrong?

MS must have gotten complaints about file searches returning too many
dlls ect. So they created the Indexing system.

but they also did another damn fool thing - the Search only returns
items that BEGIN with the string you type in; NOT partial as in
finding a file name firstxxxx.xxx by searching for rst, as in previous
Windows.
In short, they deleted the 'implied wild card * character' in file
search.

The fix is to lead your search string with the * character, no
spaces, and you will get the files you deserve.

Hi!

Problem solved!

Probably it took the indexing service a few evenings to finish,
because yesterday it magically worked! Very annoying that there is no
progres bar or at least a status indicator for these kinds of
operations. (Same with adding music to the Media Center...)

I still don't understand why I needed to index from C:, but I assume
you have to get used to not understaning Vista...
