WHAT?

I just got off the phone with Windows Support - they want to charge me to
get support on my Windows2003 server - which, after installing one of their
windows updates I am dead in the water. They want to charge me to fix what
their update broke???

How confident I am to install any more updates.....

maybe my colleagues are right.... Linux???

Charge me??? If I charged my customers for things I broke I wouldn't have
customers.

Is this really the option?????

----
I installed the updates using windows update
Rebooted
Now am able to log in to any server account
but only see a blank screen - no desktop.
As the login is processed, hour glass showing, there is a very small box
(1/32" square) that appears and then disappears - never seen this before.
Then i'm left with a blank screen.

SAME exact thing when I try to log into safe mode.

Help???

Mike;
Yes, it is free, you possibly went to the incorrect links:

Thats exactly where I went. Once they find out its a server you can't get
any further without giving them a credit card. After complaining loudly and
hanging up the first time - arguing kindly and then hanging up the second
time - the third time I realized that they had me over a barrel - I gave my
ccard for the $245 bucks.....

In talking to this tech, he said that he might have the option to refund if
they find it to be a winupdate issue. however, they keep trying to tell me
that even tho it crashed as a result of windows update, its probably because
of some software, driver or hardware that I have installed - and the update
crashed because of it. To me, this is not my fault.

I'm on hold with them now while waiting for a windows update UNinstall to
take place.

Quite right, you should chage Microsoft $1000 a minute for downtime caused by
their malicious software.

As long as you do not expect it since it will never happen.

I would love to invoice them just for spite... but won't.

I do have to say, I've been very impressed with the support I have received
from ALL the techs I've worked with at Microsoft since yesterday afternoon.
I did purchase the support and they DID refund the cost due to it being a
WindowsUpdate issue.

Blank Desktop after updating to MS05-025: Cumulative security update for
Internet Explorer (883939)

But its been a lot of my billable time gone. I spent yesterday on the phone
with them from 3:45pm until 7:30pm - and resumed this morning at 8:30 and
just now got off the phone at 3:15pm (still not totally resolved, but I do
have a desktop again - but the hotfix won't install).

Glad to hear it was refunded, since update issues are free.
It is unfortunate the loss of billable time

Believe it or not, its still not resolved...

And the last I heard from them, on the bill standpoint, was when I asked
them yesterday if this support call would be refunded. Now they tell me
that they're not sure if it will OR NOT. Their statement was (quote):

"... but it may not be a patch itself it could be a hardware or software
having conflicting with this security patch."

Um... am I missing something here? My hardware/software was workign fine
before installing the patch - but its still the fault of my hw/sw?

If A breaks B, then B breaks C
Did A break C, or did B break C?

I know my feeling on that question... but I'm not the one that developed
"A" either.
