I currently own an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook that came with Vista Hom
Premium and 1 GB Ram (32 bit OS). I kept Vista up to date with al
updates from Microsoft and a couple of months ago had a problem wit
error code 80070436. At first I was told that a "driver with that nam
already exists", but when I restarted my computer Vista would not start

My first contact was with ACER and I was told that since I had modifie
the software that came with my computer, i.e. I installed Vista SP1
they were not responsible for any problems. They also did not offer an
suggestions as to how to fix the problem. Scratch Acer off my futur
purchase list.

Secondly I contacted Microsoft, since it was their update that cause
the problem. I had already tried systerm restore, etc., and as usua
with them, someone re-stated the same problem I wrote about and asked i
they understood. When I responded affirmative, they sent it up th
ladder. My second contact did try to help and at one point sent me
disc that was supposed to help. It did not and I e-mailed my contac
right away. Despite multiple emails, I have yet (6 weeks) to hear bac
from anyone at microsoft. Perhaps my next notebook will be a MAC.

After an exhaustive attempt to get help from Acer and Microsoft on th
above error code, I finally had to restore my system without the suppor
of recovery discs (none were supplied by Acer). In doing so I lost al
data and software that I had installed. I guess this error is beyon
the ability of anyone at Microsoft to fix.

To anyone else who gets this error code, good luck, because you ar
completely on your own

Try Googling the error code? Don't wait for MS. Contact them. Contact a
Microsoft IT advisor [for your country]. They could push things along.

Comment: That is really pathetic of Acer. You install a SP and they won't
support it? I would send a nice/nasty letter to them telling them that they
can go ____ __________. They are an OEM provider. They are suppost to support
the laptop [complain to MS saying Acer isn't providing support may help].

After finding the "help" site at microsoft, I did google the error code
but could not find success there either. As for contacting Microsoft, I
have sent multiple e-mails to my last contact and finally sent an e-mail
to that contact's supervisor. My response? Nada.

I know this is not a big problem for Microsoft, but my notebook was
only a paperweight for almost two months. I would at least expect some
kind of ongoing communication from them until the problem was resolved,
but I guess that expectation was too high. Mac looks better every day.

Where do you think I went for help?

My incident identifier was SRX1081274275

However, when your contact stops replying to your emails and their
supervisor won't reply to emails what are you supposed to do? Start the
whole process all over again? That's crap. That's the kind of service
I have received from Microsoft.

Don't just "Google" for an unprefixed hex string; search for its prefixed value 0x80070436
and the decimal equivalent of its last half. Search all the files that the update changed or created
for those strings too.

Assuming your OS gives the same meaning to 0x436, I'll show you what it might mean on mine:

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>set /a c = 0x436
1078
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name.
</cmd_output>

You would have to look at the install log and perhaps invoke verbose logging
to see *which* service name this code was about. If necessary use ProcMon
to trace the install attempt and supplement whatever additional diagnostic context
you do manage to find. E.g. that would show you any related file and registry accesses
for each message. You would have to infer which message based on timestamp,
length of message, etc.

Good luck

Thanks, but it's over for now. As you can tell I have bad feeling
about both Acer and Microsoft.

This was just letting others know of how I was treated by bot
companies. As I said in the first post, Acer is off my list for an
future purchase and next time I am looking at changing my computer
will definitely give the Mac line strong consideration
